The Importance of Prosthetics in the Lives of Amputees

Amputation implies to the loss or removal of a body part such as a finger, toe, hand, foot, arm, or leg. The causes of limb amputation are many, such as:

• Cancer

• Frostbite

• Birth defect

• Serious infection that does not get better with antibiotics or other treatment

• Blood vessel (vascular) disease, especially diabetes or peripheral arterial disease

• Injury (Such as motor vehicle crash, work-related accident, or military combat)

Amputation can be a life-changing experience that impacts the ability of a person to move, work, interact with others, as well as maintaining their independence. Emotional trauma, phantom limb phenomena and continuing pain can further. It can take time for amputees to accept their limb loss. Having a positive mindset, along with the right prosthetic devices and proper physical rehabilitation, can significantly improve the quality of life of amputees.

The Use of Prosthetics

A prosthetic implies an artificial limb that replaces a missing body part. Prosthetics are designed to replace as much function of the original limb as possible. They can be helpful in enabling amputees to take care of a variety of daily activities, like walking, eating, and being able to get dressed on their own.

Nowadays, there is a wide variety of prostheses available that are designed to function like a natural arm, leg, hand, or foot. While the designs of the prosthetics may differ from one another, they typically have similar parts. There are many artificial limb centres that design and develop prosthetics for amputees.

Empowering People with Disabilities

Before the development of advanced prosthetics, amputees often faced issues in finding employment and had to be dependent on others for help. Fortunately, with a well-fitted and functional prosthetic device, it becomes easier for people to regain employment, as well as support themselves and their families.

Life is easy for people who lose their limbs in accidents or due to some disease. However, modern science and technology can be of huge help in aiding people without limbs, who need to lower their dependence on others.

Today, there are even artificial limb centre in India that distribute free of cost artificial limbs to those in dire need of such support. These limbs significantly help people to earn their livelihood despite disabilities.
